Course Overview
This course provides training for electrical or other personnel working in or planning to work in Hazardous Areas of the IEC 60079 industry that procure, install, inspect, and maintain Ex Equipment.
Topics of the course are:
- History
- Sources of ignition
- Nature of hazards, identification of hazards
- Area classifications in Zone 0, 1 and 2
- Selection of Ex apparatus, cabling, glanding and sundry items
- Ex Inspection and maintenance
- Management and remedial work
- ATEX and UKCA
- Temperature ratings, Gas Groups, IP code
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this IEC 60079 course the student will be able to:
- Understand basics of hazardous area operations including installation, maintenance and inspection
- Standard practice and where the Ex equipment may be used
- View various types of Ex installations
- Understand which activities are and are not allowed with regards to maintenance and repairs of Ex equipment.
- Review various types of Ex inspections.
Learning Techniques
To provide the highest quality training experience, this course will consist of the following instructional elements
- Training Specialist led presentation – The core elements will be presented in a classroom environment and workshop.
- Certificate issued: CompEx should the candidates be successful with the online test and practical assessment.
Attendees
This qualification is suitable for practicing electrical or instrument technicians who are involved in installing, inspecting and maintaining certified Ex electrical equipment in locations where gases and vapors can potentially create a hazardous area.

- Practicing competent electrical technicians
- Practicing competent instrument technicians
- Electrical/instrument engineers with previous practical experience
This course has been developed in consultation with industry to ensure the core competence of existing and potential workers who operate in these environments. The qualification consists of four units, which cover the minimum requirements for safe working practices in hazardous locations. Candidates will learn about the safety considerations that should be applied to work areas that contain potentially explosive or flammable atmospheres and the factors that are used to classify their location. The course includes instruction on how to read hazardous area certification, labelling and documentation, and also informs candidates about the main protection concepts, categories and levels that are applied to certified Ex electrical equipment. Successful candidates will demonstrate the knowledge and skills to meet the requirements highlighted in the IEC 60079 series of standards and the relevant national standards and directives. This qualification focuses on the minimum specifications identified in IEC60079:0, IEC60079:10.1, IEC60079:14 and IEC60079:17.
